Why? Coz’ Summer’s nearly here. We’re a bit like Olaf from Frozen. Y’know how he sings about loving “Suuuuuummmerr…..?” except we won’t melt!!
Anyway, the Mother’s finally sorted herself out and gotten herself organized coz’ our local radio station Mix96 have asked us to come up with awesome things to do in the summer; some really cool ideas which are fun and cheap (or free) to do during the Summer holidays. We like working with Mix96 and I do think Katy and Darren are funny (Katy’s also a bit pretty but don’t tell the Mother I said that…..) Katy also always remembers my name. Once seen, never forgotten, is my motto!
I just loooove the Summer…..
So, we’ve been having a little think and we reckon we’ve come up with a few ideas which you’re gonna love to do during the Summer. We’ve tried to think of activities that are varied and will appeal to kids of all ages and we really hope you enjoy them………….
Building your own Family Tree
Now, the Mother can’t take credit for this awesome idea although I bet she wishes she could. We regularly have a natter with a very cool blogger called Karen and she links up to our weekly Wednesday linky called Mini Creations. One of our favouritest posts ever was Karen’s Family Tree and you can read the full blog post here. It really is mega cool fun to do and what a great pressie if a family member has a birthday over the Summer holidays. What we really like about this idea is that you can do this inside the house or outside but I guess y’all know that I like to do the messy activities in the house; the Mother’s face goes a funny colour is I use paints near her suede curtains!
Whilst I’m learning to make my family tree, I’m also climbing them….
PS If ever your stuck for crafty ideas, please check out our weekly linky which we’ve talked about. Some bloggers have some awesome ideas which they share with us.
Be a Tourist in your own Town
Now, I love visiting our local town of Aylesbury. We’re really lucky to have new, modern places to visit but also there’s some really old places to see too (some as old as the Mother or EVEN older…….) Me and the Mother were having a chatter over Haribo and her ‘juice’ – I had the Haribo and she was supping her ‘juice’ – and we were thinking it would be really cool if you pretended to be a tourist in your own town. You can visit all the streets/buildings that you’ve never visited before. And don’t forget the parks, old buildings and always, to quote the Mother’s mad friend Afra, ALWAYS “look up” as apparently you get to see loads of old and interesting stuff. The Mother is always going on about something called
places placks plaques and we have loads in our town and there’s loads of old buildings to look at too. We also want to walk down a few streets that we’ve never been before and explore stuff and places. What we really like about this idea is that you can get your Dad or the Mother to spend as much or as little money as you like doing this. Some places have special places really near to you (we’ve got Waddesdon Manor near us but we’ve never visited before but that will be sorted this Summer.) Or……… you can simply visit your local Tourist Information office and they can tell you about the really cool places to visit. We reckon it would be really cool if you kept all the things you collected like bus tickets, leaflets, photos and sweetie wrappers (you HAVE to have had some sweeties during the day) and you can make a scrap book of everything. The Mother is always visiting a photo shop where she gets loads of photos printed and she reckons she doesn’t spend a lot of money and she’s always getting them printed off from her phone too. They would look really cool in a scrap book.
PS The photo is when the Mother went to Liverpool with my Dad-Dah who was born there. She says this is a really famous road sign……
Bubble Wrap Painting
Y’know this activity is deffo one for doing outside – you remember those suede curtains that belong to the Mother? Well, she’s a bit protective of them…. This is such as awesome thing to do and it also involves a bit of sellotape and everyone knows that sellotape is really cool, but just a word of advice, don’t stick it on the Mother’s forehead when she’s sleeping. She doesn’t like it when you try and take it off! Basically, get loads of paper and take it outside and put it on the floor. Then wrap your feet in bubble wrap and wraps loads and loads of sellotape around your ankles (this is very funny when the Mother has to take it all off from your feet). Walk through the trays of different paints that one of your Big People have thoughtfully placed outside and then walk over the paper. It’s really cool and the bubble paper pops and you get to make some very cool art work. You can use loads of different colours and then, if your Mother is really good, you can save up the painted paper and use it for wrapping paper………….
PS The wrapping paper suggestion is only for those of you who have REALLY organized Mothers. I’m rather interested to see what the Mother will do with mine………… If you need a bit more information, check Mess for Less as she is really awesome!
May not be bubble painting outside, but I think you can see how serious we can be with mess inside……
Disco in the Garden
As its the Summer holidays, you can stay awake a little longer. Last year the Mother organised Glastonbury in the Garden and this year its all about having a disco in the garden. Invite your friends around and play the music and dont forget the dance routines to Happy, Gangnam Style and Let it Go. You can spend the day prepping by making little bags of popcorn, a simple bbq or flavoured ice cubes and of course sorting out the play list. It doesnt have to go on late but its a great way for us Little Big People to keep in touch with our school friends during the holidays and it doesn’t have to last long eithe
Water fights Rule!
Everybody loves a water fight but sometimes you need a little planning (like you can see in the video above – I got Nanny a good ‘un!). The thing that’s really cool at the moment is the colour run where you take part in an assault course and use coloured dye. Well, let’s make this a bit more seasonal. Buy a few bags of water balloons and a few bottles of food dye. Wear your oldest clothes and allocate teams. Don’t use all the food dye balloon all at once. Use anything you’ve got – super soakers, hose pipes, water bottles and let the fun begin. Everytime someone has been targeted in the middle of the chest or a chosen body part, the person who got them gets to throw a coloured balloon at that person. Its great fun and a great way to keep up kids running around…….
The Mother used to do this in Brownies and you will need at least 2 adults so you can split into 2 teams. The first team goes off with armfuls of twigs, stones and other things from nature and the ground. They get a 20 minute head start and the best thing with this is that you can actually do it in your local estate. The first group go on ahead and leave clues for the second team who start after 20 minutes. You can make arrows from twigs or even draw up a list of signs you have created and give it to the other team before you start. The idea is for the second team to be able to follow the trail and end up in the same location as the first team. Its really nice if you end up in a park or somewhere where you can have a picnic but don’t make the trail too easy – make them walk and work at following you.
Make up Dad
Sometimes the Dad’s can get off a bit easy over the holidays so this activity gives us kids a chance to have a bit of fun with them. Grab all the old makeup (make sure you ask the Mother what you can use or you could end up using her good stuff!), facepaints and glitter you have around the house and sit Dad down. Don’t let him look in the mirror and go and create a masterpiece. He’s got to sit still, not look and totally accept all the photos that will be taken of him afterwards. Maybe some spray glitter for the hair too. Don’t forget Dad would also look really pretty in hair clips, the funny hair extensions you may have hanging around and don’t forget to tweet and facebook the photos to us afterwards. We’d love to see them!!!
We’re gonna be talking to Darren and Katy a lot over the Summer with loads more ideas so we hope you’ll be listening!!!
